Your post reminded me of a long-ago visit to Hampton Court where the Tudor kitchens are recreated, they had truly exotic food served to royal guests! <br /><br />Incidentally, the Mughal Empire (India, 1520's-1850's) was one of the richest and their obsession with the worldly pleasures also extended to fancy meals. Some of their recipes survive, but I don't know that any of their superbly gifted cooks' names are known to general public or at all. And of course the common people had coarse bread and some glob of something or other, that the kings wouldn't feed to their animals.
